Spice Drawer Organization for the OCD
I love myself a well organized space whether it’s a linen closet, junk drawer, or spice drawer in this case. Orderly storage of our belongings is not only functional but aesthetically pleasing as well. Can a spice drawer spark joy? Well I smile and sigh happily when I open mine. Does that count? :)
Our herbs and spices can quickly get messy and disorderly if we’re not being intentional with how we store them. And…well…that can get frustrating. Spending time in the kitchen preparing food should be live giving - not torture! But if you’re spending extra time thumbing through a hodgepodge of spices, you’ll likely end up the latter…tortured.
If you’re like most people (and how we were), you probably purchase spices from your local grocery store. Our grocer carries about 5 different brands, and therefore, 5 different types of jars. Jars of different sizes, with different labels, made of different materials. Now, there is NOTHING wrong with organizing the mismatched jars you do have. That is what we did for…well…basically our entire lives! Quarantine inspired me to declutter, and my OCD + minimalist mindset needed a change!
Here was our spice drawer before. It was orderly and functional.
But, if you’re ready to take your spice drawer game (or cabinet) to the NEXT LEVEL of OCD, then you’re reading the right post.
What I Purchased
I took to Amazon, naturally, and found a 36 pack of spice jars that included two different label options. I was IN. There is just something about cohesive glass jars with pretty labels that make me swoon. The round black labels we selected can also be used on the lid for up right storage if you’re using a deep drawer. This set also came with clear labels if you preferred a more minimal look.
If you’re concerned there won’t be a label for your strange, exotic spice…THERE WILL BE. There were pages upon pages of labels of spices I’ve never even heard of! They even include blank labels if you want to make your own. I was thoroughly impressed. The entire set of jars + labels cost under $35.
The transferring of spices to their new jars was easier than expected. My husband and I set up a little assembly line. I labeled the jars, and he used a small funnel to transfer our spices and herbs. Any plastic containers we discarded and any old glass jars we kept and cleaned out for plant propagation!
If you’re using a drawer, like we are, you could lay them all flat on their side, OR you could purchase the wooden spice jar storage organizer insert. This handy piece perfectly matched the inside of our drawers making it look custom, and helped keep the spices in place! It looks beautiful, too.
We also use shelf and drawer liner to protect the inside of our drawers from scratches, stains, and water damage. I was especially grateful for our liner after an explosive mishap with Old Bay’s. Needless to say, I tossed the old liner and replaced with a fresh one! We use this in all our kitchen cabinets and drawers and it’s nice keeping it on hand.
If you’ve come this far without scrolling to see the final product…I am impressed! And if you enjoy photos of order and cohesion, you’ll be very satisfied with the result.
Tell me in the comments…do you keep your spices nice and organized or is that an area you’d like to tidy up?
Happy scrolling! :)
